Walt Disney World’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride is getting a brand-new comic tie-in.

Revealed in Marvel’s November 2022 solicitations, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind #1 is a new one-shot from writer Kevin Shinick, artist Gerardo Sandoval and cover artist Paco Medina. The synopsis for the issue reads, “The Worldmind is collecting data for the new Xandar pavilion on Terra and who knows Earth better than Peter Quill? (Probably…a lot of people…but definitely not the other Guardians!) What Star-Lord doesn’t know, is that a Celestial has been watching and waiting for the Guardians of the Galaxy to be distracted to begin his plan to wipe humanity from existence.”

What is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind?

Based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Cosmic Rewind opened in May 2022 at Walt Disney World’s Epcot. The ride takes passengers on a journey starring a number of fan-favorite characters — including Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Drax the Destroyer and Gamora — after they receive a distress call from the Nova Corps. In order to save the Galaxy, the Guardians have to face a massive and dangerous Celestial named Eson, who briefly appears in James Gunn’s 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy film. “As part of the EPCOT transformation, strap in, get your game face on and crank up your mixtape as you twist, turn and blast through an awesome intergalactic chase, which develops through the Guardians attempting to stop Eson’s devious plan – with help from the guests who board the ride, of course,” the description for the ride reads.

Created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, the modern incarnation of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in 2008’s Annihilation: Conquest #6. Prior to the debut, a Guardians of the Galaxy team initially featuring Yondu, Vance Astro and others first appeared in 1969’s Marvel Super-Heroes #18. A number of other heroes have also joined various versions of the team over the years, including Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, Starhawk and more.

Cosmic Rewind isn’t Disney’s first Guardians of the Galaxy-based ride. In 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! opened at the Disney California Adventure park inside the former The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride. The attraction takes guests through the Collector’s vast assortment of gathered goods while Rocket leads a charge to rescue his imprisoned teammates.

The Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind #1 one-shot releases Nov. 2 from Marvel Comics.
