Dragons will roar again! HBO has officially renewed House of the Dragon for a second season, within a week of its series debut. The move came after the premiere episode broke viewership records and became the highest-watched premiere in the history of the cable network.

Set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon was the much-anticipated prequel, and it surely did live up to the expectations of fans. Read on to know what HBO had to say about the exciting update.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Confirmed

Confirming the renewal of the show for a second season, Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of programming at HBO, said in a statement, “We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with Season 1. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.”

“A huge thank you (to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik) for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with Season 2.”

When the new season will arrive still remains a question. As for the first season, it took almost a year for filming, and months of post production work, which is still going on. So if everything goes well, we can expect season 2 by 2024.

Showrunner had Earlier Hinted that the Show Could have Many More Seasons

Even before the series premiere, showrunner Miguel Sapochnik had hinted in an interview that the series would go on for multiple seasons. He had said, “We’ve chosen a story that’s almost like Star Wars: Episode IV. It’s the New Hope. We can go backwards, we can go forwards. There’s a lot of opportunities there. I hope we’ve been given the opportunity to set up something.”

Meanwhile, the renewal of the show is also a positive sign for other GOT spin-offs in development at HBO. The network is planning at least four scripted shows based on the world created by George R.R. Martin. These include a sea snake prequel, a Jon Snow centric project and a show based on Princess Nymeria set 1000 years before GOT.

House of the Dragon Premiere Reached Nearly 10 Million Viewers

The series debut on August 21, was able to reach 9.986 million viewers in the US. This included HBO max streams and linear airings. Till Friday, the episode has been watched by 20 million viewers. The premiere also went on to become the largest launch for an HBO series in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon chronicles the events of the Targaryen family history. The show boasts of a stellar cast that includes Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower.

House of the Dragon new episodes premiere every Sunday on HBO Max. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
