Google Maps is an extremely handy app or website – there’s no denying it.

You can use it on your smartphone, your tablet or your desktop to help you plan your route from A to B.

When used as a SatNav, it will start to show drivers not only the fastest but most eco-friendly routes to take – and, if you need privacy, it even offers an Incognito mode.

Of course, Google Maps can help you get somewhere specific that isn’t marked out on the map, by letting you drop a pin at any location shown and providing an address.

You can then use the pin to give you driving or walking directions, so you won’t get lost on your way.

Want to know how to drop a pin on Google Maps yourself? It’s remarkably straightforward.

On desktop, simply head to google.com/maps to get started.

Once you’ve opened the map, you simply need to find roughly where you want to go.

If you know you’re headed to a park near the Eiffel Tower, for example, start by searching ‘Eiffel Tower’ in the search bar. Or search the map by dragging your mouse across the screen.

When you’ve found your destination, simply click the exact spot you want to reach, and a little grey pin will appear.

A white box will appear somewhere on your screen, showing a name, postcode, address and coordinates.

In the same white box is a blue arrow. Click on either to bring up a sidebar, which will give you directions to your destination.

The process is very similar for smartphones – both on Android and iPhone.

Simply open up the Google Maps app, and start by searching for a destination or exploring the map by scrolling.

When you’ve found where you’d like to drop a pin, you simply need to tap – but it’s quite a lengthy tap, which you’ll need to hold down for a second or two before a red pin appears.

At the bottom of your screen, a white box will appear giving you the name of the place you’ve pinned, along with an address.

There’ll also be blue buttons offering to show you ‘directions’ as well as giving you the option to save your pin.
