Not Okay, a satirical black comedy film has premiered on Hulu recently. The film follows the journey of a 20-something millennial, Danni Sanders, who lacks empathy and goes to any extent to be the center of attraction.

Danni goes on a writing retreat to Paris to catch the attention of her workplace crush, Colin. But the city is hit by a terrorist attack and instead of telling her family and friends the truth, she pretends to be a survivor.

Ever since the release of the film, viewers have been thinking about whether the film is based on a true story. Read on to find out if the film’s story is real or fictional.

Is Not Okay is Based on a True Story?

Not Okay is not based on a true story and the characters in the film are entirely fictitious. However, the look of Colin’s character was inspired by Machine Gun Kelly, Pete Davidson and Justin Bieber.

Though the story of the film is fictitious, it is indeed set against a real backdrop. Not Okay explores a range of themes prevalent in today’s times including social media trolls, influencer culture, trauma and mental health, burnout, and self-awareness.

The film’s director, Quinn Shephard also talked about writing the film in 2018, ‘in reaction’ to what was going on in the country at the time. She revealed in an interview, “At the time, it was peak Trump America and there was a huge rise in gun violence and that was all happening played against a backdrop of influencer ads and celebrity gossip and skincare.”

“It just felt so surreal, waking up and immersing myself in that world daily when I checked my phone. I really wanted to talk about that feeling of the cognitive dissonance of those two worlds being constantly blended together,” she added.

Not Okay Portrays School Shootings and Terrorist Attacks in Paris

One important event in the film is the school shooting. Although the event was fictional in the film, it is prevalent in the real world. The film also featured terrorist attacks in Paris, though they were not same as the 2015 attacks that claimed 137 lives.

Considering the sensitivity of the subjects, Shephard wanted the events to be portrayed seriously and authentically. She revealed, “I’m very passionately anti-gun, I have a tremendous amount of empathy for and respect for trauma survivors.”

“Honestly, it was scary but I tried to have faith that if I wrote from a very true place in my heart of wanting to never ever speak where it wasn’t my place or depict those things with humor or satire, I wanted those to feel very seriously handled by the film,” she further added.

The Film is Available to Stream on Hulu

Not Okay was released on Hulu on July 29, 2022. It has been produced by Searchlight Pictures and written and directed by Quinn Shephard. The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics and has been appreciated by the audience.

Not Okay stars Zoey Deutch as Danni Sanders, Dylan O’Brien as Colin, Mia Isaac as Rowan Aldren, Embeth Davidtz as Judith Sanders, Karan Soni as Kelvin, Brennan Brown as Harold Sanders and Nadia Alexander as Harper.
