I have no problem admitting that I love cereal. Even as an adult, I enjoy kicking back on a Saturday morning eating a nice (huge) bowl of cereal. Typically, it you can find Fruity Pebbles overflowing from my adult sized bowl, but on occasion, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, or any limited-edition revival of a nostalgic chomp will grace my tastebuds.

As the self-proclaimed Queen of Nostalgic Things, however, I’m always up for trying something new (here’s looking at you and those Snoop Loopz, Snoop!), I’m even more excited about trying a new spin on something old. So, when I heard Kellogg’s was dropping a new version of their to-go cereal bowls, I was both intrigued and a little worried.

On the outside, the new Kellogg’s Insta-Bowls look just like their traditional ready-to-eat cereals. But there’s one little (or really, big) difference: you don’t need to add milk to eat them. According to the brand, the Insta-Bowls — which are available in Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, and Raisin Bran Crunch varieties — only need cold water, a little stir, and boom! You’re all set with an on-the-go bowl of cereal and milk. Weird? Sure! But how does it taste?

To be able to answer this question, I tried the Froot Loops bowl to start. One thing to note is that there’s a fill line that you should pay attention to. Directions state that all you need is a half cup of cold water to make this a reality and a spoon. And that really is all you need! Don’t worry about the half cup not being enough; it took the cereal right to the fill line. So, I added in the water, give it a stir for 10 seconds and it was ready.

One thing I want to note is that it seems as if there’s powdered milk at the bottom of the bowl. I didn’t notice it until I started to stir in the water though, so I didn’t have time to inspect it prior to.

After stirring one more time for good measure, the liquid kind of looked like milk — but more like almond milk. Once I got over the fact that I could be eating powered milk (I’m not a huge fan of milk, but that’s a different story), I took my first bite. To my surprise, it really did taste like good ol’ cereal and milk! And, if you’re one of those people that likes to add ice cubes to their bowl of cereal, this is very similar to the taste you’ll get with the new Insta-Bowls.

So now for the important part. Would I buy these again and would I recommend someone buying them? If I’m in a pinch, sure! But just to have at home for me? No, because I don’t think I would be able to eat them constantly. For people always on the go or parents that are always looking for quick and easy handheld breakfast options for kids, this is definitely the way to go.

If you’re interested in trying this out for yourself, however, the new Kellogg’s Insta-Bowls are currently available at Walmart for $1.98 per bowl with additional nationwide retailers being added soon. Who knows, you just may find me in the aisle with you stocking up before a road trip!
