Researchers Create Electronic Tattoo Capable of Continuously Monitoring Blood Pressure #Researchers #Create #Electronic #Tattoo #Capable #Continuously #Monitoring #Blood #Pressure Welcome to Viasildes, here is the new story we have for you today:
Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University have created an electronic tattoo that can be temporarily printed on a wrist for hours and deliver continuous blood pressure monitoring at an accuracy level that exceeds nearly all of the devices today. Whether it be stressful situations, sleeping, exercising, or other activities, it can deliver thousands of measurements instantly.
You might be wondering why don’t smartwatches have this functionality? Well, smartwatches slide around on the wrist and might be too far from arteries for accurate readings. This electronic tattoo is made from graphene, one of the strongest and thinnest materials in existence, precisely arranged into thin layers. It basically records its measurements by zapping an electrical current into the skin and then analyzing the body’s response, otherwise known as bioimpedance. Then there’s this electric tattoo that embeds smartphone controls directly on your skin.
Taking infrequent blood pressure measurements has many limitations, and it does not provide insight into exactly how our body is functioning. The sensor for the tattoo is weightless and unobtrusive. You place it there. You don’t even see it, and it doesn’t move,” Jafari said. “You need the sensor to stay in the same place because if you happen to move it around, the measurements are going to be different,” said Roozbeh Jafari, a professor at Texas A&M and co-leader of the project.
